Leonardo Locascio wants to simplify Italian wine laws.
Although he's done a great deal to get Americans to look beyond the wicker basket Chianti bottles of the 1970's, he's now had enough. At the Vino 2011 Conference in New York City last month he said “most Italian wine laws are totally irrelevant to the American consumer. People can’t make their way around DOCs or DOCGs. The whole thing needs to be simplified and made easier. We have some appellations that are totally insane.”
After spending an inordinate time entrenched in Italian Wine Law while working on our Wine Map of Italy, I would have to agree. Still, how do you go about simplifying wine laws? In Italy?! Here's a first stab1:
